Gary & Giuce with Big Buddha in the distance. Lantua Island, Hong Kong.
Hong Kong & Bangkok
I watch Shanghai’s skyline slowly disappear from the airplane’s window as we take off and make our way to Hong Kong during the early morning on January 26th. We have a whole day to spend in HK and each of us are looking forward to seeing the city we’ve heard so much about.
After spending most of the day venturing out to see the biggest bronze Buddha in the world located on a small island adjacent to Hong Kong called Lantau, we make our way into the heart of the city to take in as much as we can. I’m expecting modern, big, clean and bright—and that‘s about exactly what we get. We arrive during rush hour to a bustling maelstrom of people, vehicles, and big buildings with big billboards. We have just enough time to eat, walk around and take some pictures and then it‘s back to the airport to make our way to Bangkok. Our brief stay in HK is enough to see the surface of the place, however, we don’t have much of an opportunity to delve in to our surroundings—but, for the most part, we like what we see.
We arrive in Bangkok late Tuesday evening, get in a cab, and head toward Lub D Bangkok, the hostel we’ll be staying in for the next three nights. We find Lub D to be clean, friendly and quite the bargain (about $10 USD per person per night). Our time in Bangkok is spent exploring the city’s historical sights during the day and perusing bazaars and the other aspects Bangkok is renown for during the evening. It might be understating it, but the place loses just about all of its appeal after the third night and we‘re ready to leave Bangkok in our wake to enjoy the white sand beaches of Thailand’s beautiful islands. Paradise, here we come.
